Wellington backs straight onto the Blackdown Hills, and the ground rises quickly from the Tone valley floor to the open escarpment where the Monument stands on the ridge. Some of that slope is open grassland, some is wooded, and a person could be on either within the same short stretch of hillside. A ground search treats the two very differently, because sightlines through trees and sightlines across open grass call for different pacing and different numbers of people.

A flight over the same ground can move between the open escarpment and the wooded slope below it in a single pass, and the live feed lets a coordinator see straight away which kind of ground is being searched, so the right approach can be decided on the spot rather than guessed at from a map beforehand.

The Blackdown escarpment sits close enough to town that south-westerly weather accelerates sharply as it crosses the ridge, even on a day that feels calm down in Wellington itself. For a ground team that matters twice over: the climb is harder in poor conditions, and anyone already exposed on the open hillside is colder and more at risk than the weather down in town would suggest. Flight planning here checks conditions at ridge height specifically, not just what the town itself is experiencing.

By contrast the Tone valley immediately to the north is far more sheltered, so a single search around Wellington can actually span both a harsh, exposed stretch of ground and a much calmer one only a short distance apart, which is useful to know when weighing up where a missing person is most at risk.

Tonedale Mills and Wellington Park sit within the town itself, and a search often starts from a point like this before extending up toward the open escarpment, so the aircraft can cover that transition ground, from streets to fields to open hillside, in one continuous flight rather than three separate ones.

The Blackdown farms on the steeper slopes also carry livestock, and checking an exposed hillside by air is quicker and doesn't put a person onto steep, uneven ground themselves, particularly once the light starts to go and the escarpment gets harder to see clearly on foot.

Some of the escarpment below the Monument is wooded rather than open grass, and that changes what a thermal pass can promise. Heat from a person under a stand of trees can be masked by the canopy above it in exactly the way it would be anywhere else on this range of hills, so a search that reaches wooded ground is planned around tracks and clearings where the canopy actually breaks, with a visual check following up wherever the thermal picture is uncertain rather than treated as the final word.
