Chard stands on a ridge over 120 metres up, high enough that streams either side of the town run off toward two different coasts, and the farmland surrounding it sits on that same high, open ground. The reservoir margin adds its own consideration too, with reed and bank vegetation close to the water that behaves a bit like ground cover further inland, worth checking as part of the same flight rather than treated separately.

The wider farmland around Chard is mostly large arable and pasture fields typical of this part of Somerset, and a flight over a run of them is a quick way to check for strayed sheep or cattle, with the live feed shown to a farmer or coordinator so a specific field can be flagged for a closer look on foot.

Being the highest town in the county also means Chard is usually the first place in this part of Somerset to lose the light in low winter cloud, and a search that starts here in reasonable visibility can find conditions closing in faster than the forecast for the surrounding lowland suggested. That is factored into how long a flight window is planned for, rather than assumed to match whatever a valley town nearby is experiencing at the same hour.
